“BREEDERS’ BRIEFCASE”
We have heard many times about how “it used to be”.
.. Within a breed, everyone was friendly and supportive with common
goals and dreams. Breeders were fierce competitors in the ring,
but after the show, everyone would congregate to share knowledge
and ideas and to “talk dogs. With the phasing out of benched
shows and the always increasing number of available shows, many
folks within a breed hardly know each other--much less share ideas
or mentor a newcomer. Finding a mentor has become more difficult.
It is not unusual for a novice fancier to get his first showdog
from a distant kennel – that kennel could be across the
country or on the other side of the world.
This lack of accessible mentors has been a topic of frequent
conversation and lamentation; and, it finally occurred to us that
while we can’t turn back the clock, we could try to create
a supportive environment. This setting is needed for those who
are looking for guidance and a helping hand to expand their knowledge.
We are pleased to announce the inception of the WCA Breeders’
Education Committee (BEC).
The mission of the BEC is to assist in the education of WCA members
in the importance of careful, selective breeding to preserve and
enhance the Weimaraner as it is described in the AKC approved
Breed standard.
The BEC has many goals--both short term and long term. Our initial
objective is to bring to the membership a PowerPoint presentation
and discussion of our standard with an emphasis on anatomy and
structure. We hope to present this program at National and Regional
Specialties beginning on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at the WCA
Futurity/Maturity hosted by the Garden State Weimaraner Club.
Please join us for this initial presentation under the big tent
immediately following the Maturity judging.
Future goals of the BEC include developing additional PowerPoint
programs, publishing monthly articles in the WCA magazine, posting
items of interest to the WCA website under the BEC banner “Breeders’
Briefcase,” arranging professional seminars of particular
interest to breeders, developing a mentoring program and many
more projects too numerous to list. We hope to have an active
dialog with the WCA membership via website or magazine polls.
All of these goals will take time and great effort to achieve,
but the BEC is energetic, eager, willing and able!
The BEC encourages participation by the membership. Please feel
free to phone or email any of us…we are all listed in the
WCA roster.
